Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy, which utilises art making to help aid self expression. The client is offered the use of a variety of art materials with which to create pieces of art work. The process of art making can encourage unconscious feelings and emotions to be expressed, and this may be depicted in the art work that the client creates. The art work and/or the process can become a tool for which the client can begin to find the words and meaning behind difficult feelings and emotions that they are struggling to express and make sense of. As with all therapy relationships, everything made and discussed remains confidential between therapist and client and the boundaries of this are made clear from the start of the therapeutic relationship. In this respect, the interactions within the space can be safely held by the therapist, enabling the client to build trust and the freedom to explore the issues and themes which arise during the sessions. The Art Therapist works with the client to develop a relationship wherein support can be offered at the same time as providing them opportunities to understand repeated behaviour and responses to life events. The overall aim of the work is to foster improved quality of life; particularly in relation to self esteem and relationships with others.
Journeys can provide one to one art therapy for children and young people within the school setting, on an Individual basis or to work with up to 4 separate children in one school day. Individual sessions typically take place between 30 - 50 minutes, depending on age and individual requirements.
Group art therapy can be discussed if the school has some students who are experiencing similar difficulties. Groups of up to 4 students can be accommodated and would typically take place for 50 - 90 minutes dependant on age and concentration ability of the group members.
Lydia works throughout Gloucestershire providing Art Therapy intervention for children young people.
Sessions can take place at her art space in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire or at an alternative venue, dependent on what is required.
